Today, a mysterious Ferrari prototype, seemingly based on the Ferrari 488 GTB, has been spied testing in complete silence at the company’s Fiorano track in Italy. While the video doesn’t reveal a lot, the complete silence of the vehicle after it accelerates down the main straight at the Fiorano circuit gives us a pretty good idea about the powertrain of this vehicle. While Ferrari is far from being ready to give up on their ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) options, this is likely a sign of things to come.

This is unlikely to be a completely electric vehicle. It’s most definitely a hybrid, with full-electric mode – as seen on the video – is one of the tested options. This goes in line with Ferrari’s surprisingly open discussion about the development of a hybrid powertrain for their vehicles that’s been happening in recent months. In fact, chief executive Sergio Marchionne confirmed at the Geneva Motor Show that the brand will be ready to launch a V8 hybrid powertrain in 2019. From what we see here, it’s a sign of the future and the things to come – even from die-hard V12 and V8 oriented car makers – such as Ferrari.

As you will see from the video below, the prototype is capable of running on all-electric power for a reasonable distance, probably in excess of 16 kilometers (10 miles). By comparison, the LaFerrari is the only Ferrari vehicle that’s currently equipped with such an option, but it only allows the supercar to be driven silently in and out of a garage.
