The GMC HUMMER EV is set to be revealed on May 20, 2020, and built at General Motors’ Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant in Michigan

In a rather striking turn of events – for us car nuts, that is – GMC is announcing an all-electric Hummer. Yes, you read that right, the hunking offroader is returning to the market, albeit with a more eco-friendly powertrain this time. Slated for the introduction this weekend, during the Superbowl, the GMC HUMMER EV is set to bring bold design and remarkable capability to the electrified vehicle space. According to GMC, the spot “juxtaposes the staggering anticipated performance metrics of GMC’s first all-electric truck with the remarkable quietness inherent in the operation of an electric vehicle.”

While this isn’t the first electric truck announced in the last several years, its brand name makes for quite a catchy tune. It will join in the battle with the competitors such as the Tesla Cybertruck, the Rivian R1T, Lordstown Endurance, Bollinger B2, and the electric Ford F-150, all slated to join the EV market in the following months and years. However, for the time being, the Tesla Cybertruck is grabbing all the headlines and the other competitors in the market (such as GMC) will undoubtedly need to roll up their sleeves to outsell Tesla in this market. Nontheless, the utility truck market is huge and we can definitely see why GMC decided to return the well-known monicker to the truck world.

GMC builds premium and capable trucks and SUVs and the GMC HUMMER EV takes this to new heights,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick and GMC. “We are excited to debut our revolutionary zero-emissions truck during the biggest night in TV advertising.

The GMC HUMMER EV truck will showcase the GMC brand’s design and engineering potential, and will feature 1,000 horsepower, 11,500 lb-ft of torque and will be capable of achieving a 0-60mph (0-97km/h) time of just 3.0 seconds. Right now there’s no real information on range, charging capabilities or anything else. However, the GMC HUMMER EV is set to be revealed on May 20, 2020, and built at General Motors’ Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant in Michigan. While we wait for additional specifications and data, please tune in to the Superbowl later this week and, according to the carmaker, check out the 30-second TV spot, scheduled to air somewhere during the second quarter of the big game.
